KC Wonder and the history of Hip Hop

DJing, MCing, B-Boying, Graffiti, Knowledge, Wisdom, Understanding, Freedom, Justice, Equality, Food, Clothing, Shelter, Love, Peace and happiness, these are a few of our favourite things that played a huge part of something special that took place August 11th 1973 at 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the Bronx.

They named it “Hip Hop” for some it’s a way of life, not to be confused with a genre of music, Hip Hop is a culture, a lifestyle, that avid Hip Hop heads eat, shit and breathe.

We are KC Wonder Conscious Clothing and Apparel, and to give you a bit of a back story on how our journey in Hip Hop fashion began let’s take you back to 2009. Yep it been 10 years of this shit, and it is hard when you are trying to stay in your lane with all this traffic out there but we still out here!!

We the founders without naming names started our journey wanting to create a clothing line that had simple heavyweight Tees, hoods, bucket hats, and snaps, etc nothing fancy or over the top just good old fashion streetwear that the graffiti writers, B-Boys and skaters would wear as their day-to-day.

Overpriced and poorly made garments are seen all too often in today’s market, we rather thoughtful, inspirational and somewhat educational by design, a piece that gives our buyers a feeling that they can relate to on a simpler toned down tip. Something that could be timeless. Not many know this but even though we officially registered the business in 2009 but it was 2007 that the ideas were already being formed to plan out our journey in creating a brand that will become a part of many that share the same lifestyle.

We want our fans to keep supporting our journey, and to do this we need to keep delivering consistent designs for the love of the culture. Over the last 20 years we have been in and around Hip Hop culture, and in 2010 we became members of the Universal Zulu Nation 61 Australia Chapter and still to this day live by the principles of Peace, Love, Unity and Having Fun.

There have been many changes in the “Hip Hop Culture” the clothing industry has seen loads of labels come and go, some have stuck around and looked nothing like when they first started, others have followed trends, while some continue to recreate themselves in an attempt to keep up with the trends, guess this is  what we call evolution.

We just think that with all of this noise and changes in fashion, we want to be recognized as the brand that sends out a message and educating all generations that don’t know the history of some of the pioneers that laid the foundations for the rest of us.

It’s our mission to make our designs have a real purpose and meaning behind them, so there is always a story or message that is related to Hip Hop culture with all that we do.

Over time we have put our clothes in the hands of many artists that supported the birth of Hip Hop culture from the early 70s right through to the Golden Era. We have always received positive feedback and continue to build relationships worldwide because of it, and that is exactly why we will never stop doing what we do. We did take a break but just like music artists sometimes you need a moment to recap where you have been and we see ourselves in the same light speaking through designs for Hip Hop culture.

KC Wonder will continue to deliver clean, basic hard-hitting designs along with the message influenced by the 12 Jewels. Gone are the days of seasonal collections for us, we will drop a Jewel every month and it will be available across a range of garments no matter the season.

If you don’t know what the 12 Jewels are, that’s a major part of the reason why we are here, it's ok we got you, let us break it down for you real quick.

The 12 Jewels also known as principles appear in the below order, once you understand these principles you are well on your path to self-fulfillment, self-actualization, and contentment.

Is this the meaning of life….??

Only you can answer that, but understand these Jewels, and you will understand why we do what we do, and how important it is to keep these principles and awareness in today’s Hip Hop Culture.

See below a grab taken from a book written by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan it’s called the “The Tao Of Wu”

“First a man gets KNOWLEDGE, which is knowledge of self. Then he gets WISDOM, which is the reflection of that knowledge. Then he gets UNDERSTANDING, which is the power to act on wisdom. With understanding, he sees that he has FREEDOM – that he has freed his dome from ignorance- which means he has free will. But freedom operates under law: the law of JUSTICE. That means I’m free to smack you in your face, but justice applies: There will be a reward or penalty for my actions. Therefore, I must deal with EQUALITY, because all men are created equal. By showing equality to one another we’re activating freedom, justice, and equality-the fourth through sixth jewels.

Now, those are all the things that build a man’s character. And after you attain them, you’re able to strive for FOOD, CLOTHING and SHELTER-which also have both physical and mental meanings. Obviously, food is nourishment, shelter is a home, and clothing is protection. But mental food is food from the tree of life- wisdom, science, history, food for your mind. Mental clothing is how you carry yourself the way you move and speak. If you have clothed yourself in righteousness, even the bummiest clothing has dignity. And mental shelter is the mind’s protection from the evil atmosphere-the lies and corruption of the outside world.”

“You don’t get all Twelve Jewels at once-you have to strive for them, prepare yourself for them. But after you attain the first nine, then you’re ready to make your life truly satisfying. That’s when you can attain LOVE, which is the highest elevation of understanding-either between two people or between all members of mankind. And after you attain love, then you have PEACE, and finally, you get HAPPINESS-which is total and complete satisfaction with yourself. If you’re completely satisfied with yourself, nobody can take it away from you.”

This is what we strive for, and we hope you do too, so until next time this is us signing off
